Millennium National School

A Spirited Sports Gala

Along with our focus on education and life-skills – what are we, at Millennium, passionate about? Our sports! As you know, and love, sports and games go hand in hand with knowledge and academics in the Millennium Family. No surprise then that the Annual Sports Events also went on for four sessions – almost as long as the Annual Day – in February.

Soon after the gathering was over, the practice and eliminations for the sports gala began. Teachers were drawing lots, putting up schedules for matches and games. Student volunteers helped in organizing and refereeing the races. There was also high energy commentary and music as the events were going on. Really, all we needed was a satellite link up and live coverage… It was that professionally organized and very nicely done. Everyone was high on the energy and the adrenaline. What a fantastic experience!

Our Sports Department, under the guidance of the sports head – Mr Ramdas Lekawale, was working long hours. We would see them planning and plotting even at 8 o’clock at night (after starting the day at 7 am in the school). Kudos to them too. We have a very young, dedicated and energetic team – how lucky we all are!

There were all kinds of events before the grand finale. Kids from 2 to 15 – all took part in the eliminations. We had running races, potato races, mini marathon and a marathon. There were even competitions like ball throwing, langadi, swimming, skating and tug of war. We also had matches of kho kho, badminton, basketball, chess, table tennis and volleyball. So all in all, lots of calorie burning this month on our campus.

The whole thing climaxed on the exhibition days – the 24th 25th and 27th of February. Families of the students were invited to come and watch. We had noted sports personalities who consented to join us too. We started with the national anthem, then the captains ran a lap with the house flags and the torch. After lighting the torch, students performed various demonstrations like pom pom, aerobics, exercise, flag drills, dumbbell drills, marching drills etc. There were even amazing performances of yoga and lezim.

Soon after that, we had the final running races and the tug of war. And then we had the prize distribution ceremony. The winners took positions on the victory stand and were awarded medals and certificates. There were appreciation awards for student volunteers who helped out at all important events with great enthusiasm too. This was the ultimate moment of pleasure for all award recipients amidst loud clapping and cheers.

Though we have a sports event like this every year, this was the first time parents were invited to attend. There was a good response from the parent community and a very enthusiastic crowd. We wonder if the parents and grandparents are ready for a showdown of their own – a special parents day event. Would you like it? Let us know through your comments!

So, apart from teaching students good values such as sportsmanship, team-spirit, co-operation and discipline on the field, the Sports Day has added another memory in the fabric of school life. To conclude, the Annual Sports Day of Millennium National School proved to be a knockout. Though tired physically; students went home rejuvenated in mind and spirit!
