A Spirited Sports Gala

Along with our focus on education and life-skills – what are we, at Millennium, passionate about? Our sports! As you know, and love, sports and games go hand in hand with knowledge and academics in the Millennium Family. No surprise then that the Annual Sports Events also went on for four sessions – almost as long as the Annual Day – in February.

Soon after the gathering was over, the practice and eliminations for the sports gala began. Teachers were drawing lots, putting up schedules for matches and games. Student volunteers helped in organizing and refereeing the races. There was also high energy commentary and music as the events were going on. Really, all we needed was a satellite link up and live coverage… It was that professionally organized and very nicely done. Everyone was high on the energy and the adrenaline. What a fantastic experience!

Our Sports Department, under the guidance of the sports head – Mr Ramdas Lekawale, was working long hours. We would see them planning and plotting even at 8 o’clock at night (after starting the day at 7 am in the school). Kudos to them too. We have a very young, dedicated and energetic team – how lucky we all are!

There were all kinds of events before the grand finale. Kids from 2 to 15 – all took part in the eliminations. We had running races, potato races, mini marathon and a marathon. There were even competitions like ball throwing, langadi, swimming, skating and tug of war. We also had matches of kho kho, badminton, basketball, chess, table tennis and volleyball. So all in all, lots of calorie burning this month on our campus.

The whole thing climaxed on the exhibition days – the 24th 25th and 27th of February. Families of the students were invited to come and watch. We had noted sports personalities who consented to join us too. We started with the national anthem, then the captains ran a lap with the house flags and the torch. After lighting the torch, students performed various demonstrations like pom pom, aerobics, exercise, flag drills, dumbbell drills, marching drills etc. There were even amazing performances of yoga and lezim.

Soon after that, we had the final running races and the tug of war. And then we had the prize distribution ceremony. The winners took positions on the victory stand and were awarded medals and certificates. There were appreciation awards for student volunteers who helped out at all important events with great enthusiasm too. This was the ultimate moment of pleasure for all award recipients amidst loud clapping and cheers.

Though we have a sports event like this every year, this was the first time parents were invited to attend. There was a good response from the parent community and a very enthusiastic crowd. We wonder if the parents and grandparents are ready for a showdown of their own – a special parents day event. Would you like it? Let us know through your comments!

So, apart from teaching students good values such as sportsmanship, team-spirit, co-operation and discipline on the field, the Sports Day has added another memory in the fabric of school life. To conclude, the Annual Sports Day of Millennium National School proved to be a knockout. Though tired physically; students went home rejuvenated in mind and spirit!

Tasty Treats + Cool Games = Funfair @ Millennium!

Saturday, the fourth day of February was a very happening time at Millennium. Can you guess why? It was Funfair time – The annual gala which gave us the perfect equation for a jolly good time!

Really, the funfair was the “place to be” at the Millennium National School on Saturday, 4th February 2012. Out students had a set up buzzing with commerce and activity. There were many many stalls selling their wares which ranged from pani puri to skill based games to magic tricks! All for a price, of course. But we can honestly say that anyone who attended, definitely got their money’s worth here.

The mouth-watering stuff sold at the food stalls included chat items, sandwiches, pasta, spring rolls, Idali, Wada, Corn Chat, varieties of popcorns, Appe, Kachchi Dabeli and cutlets to name a few. Amongst the desserts there were things like cakes, chocolate mousse, brownies, handmade chocolates and much more. There was also a selection of beverages like Masala Dudh, cold coffee, soft drinks and sherbets.

On the other hand; at the game stalls there were many exciting games. Games such as knocking down the tower of glasses with the ball, shooting the balloons, dart game, palace of doom, lucky draw games, guess the number, brain teasers and so on. There were many one minute games like removing lemons from the bucket of water with the help of two sticks, solving magic bricks puzzle, pinning maximum thermocol balls, collecting maximum marbles from a bucket filled of coloured water. We could see people aged 4 to 64 all having a gala time at these stalls as well.

And the best part was – the whole thing was managed by students! Yes – our very own students from classes 5 to 9 had arranged the whole affair. They worked in groups and marketed their stalls, sold their wares, worked on the demand supply equation and customer satisfaction. They also put in a solid three hours of salesmanship that day and went home with a good booty for their piggy banks.

We were quite impressed at the efficiency by which the stalls were functioning. At the food stalls, children were taking good care of cleanliness and hygiene. The stalls had very nice, creative names. The dishes were also garnished and displayed in a very tempting way, so that it was irresistible to try those out!

There was a great response from both the students and parents for this fun-filled event. Managing these stalls at the fair helped students understand and get hands on experience of planning, organizing, team work, marketing, delivering, food preparation and serving, selling, keeping records of sales done and distributing the revenue earned amongst the team members. I can safely say, we are grooming a large group of entrepreneurs!

Interestingly, the stall managing students behaved in a very matured way (not that we expected anything less from our brood). They were urging people not to litter and to enjoy themselves responsibly. But the shocker was how much many of the parents littered.  Though there were dustbins everywhere, which were regularly being emptied a lot of trash was just carelessly strewn across. It was too disturbing a sight. Also makes us wonder, if this is the attitude of the people raising the next generation – where do we really hope to reach?

Anyway, hopefully the young ones will turn the older ones around. Let’s see… And more events coming up soon. Maybe we’ll see better behaved parents there 🙂

Three cheers for our Millennium family, and a drum roll for a great performance!

Our students – on top of technology

Our students won the first place in Pune region Inter School contest Quiz on science and ICT (information and communication technology) for middle school competition sponsored by Microsoft and organized by the Computer Society of India, Pune on 25th February, 2012.

Ashutosh Kulkarni and Eashaan Godbole of class 8 won the contest. These two students will attend the next round i.e. National ICT quiz in Trivandrum.

11 schools participated in this contest with their 74 teams.
First round i.e. the qualifying round based on MCQ quiz was conducted using our myEshala software. This software helped to determine the 8 top scorer teams immediately after the qualifying round. Out of 8 teams who reached the finals two were from our school.

The final round of the quiz was designed by quiz master Ramanand (an IITian) to test the students’ awareness and understanding about Science and ICT.  All the students enjoyed the quiz immensely, thanks to the interesting questions and historical pictures about important inventions in science!

Once again, we would like to highlight our base philosophy – all round development!

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle all the way!

It was the time to celebrate the Christmas and welcome the New Year at Millennium National School on Friday, 23rd Dec. And since we do all things in a big way, our staff and students definitely know how to throw a great party. The preparations were such that the moment you entered the school you could feel the electrifying atmosphere filled with joy and zest!

There were Christmas decorations all around the school made one week in advance. The Christmas trees, bells, ribbons, sparkling garlands and pictures of Santa had already set the mood. Nice Christmas drawings by students put up on the notice boards added to the zeal.

The KG students totally freaked out on the day of the bash! One could hear the chirping of the tiny tots and the party songs being played in the background. Students were greeting each other and their teachers with “Merry Christmas”es and “Happy New Year”s.

We had arranged some amusement rides for the kindergarteners. There was a Merry-Go-Round, a Toy Train, a Ferris Wheel, a Bounce House and a Horse Cart ride. Students were standing in lines; eagerly waiting for their turn to sit in the ride. There were tattoo artists too who painted colourful tattoos on children’s hands. We also got a goat family and a cow so the students could pet the animals and feed them. Kids were amused to see these animals from so close. We had these so that it could be part of the knowledge gathering for the tiny children, about domestic animals!

The main attraction, however, was the Santa Claus. He was roaming all around ringing his bell, cheering students and shaking hands with them. Santa also handed out balloons, chocolates and whistles. They thoroughly enjoyed yet another fun filled school day. In fact, we may even venture to state that the teachers seemed to be having as much fun as the kids did!

Students were already in a holiday mood as they get the entire next week off. And what better way to begin the holidays than having a fantastic party! The overjoyed faces of the children who simply couldn’t stop smiling is enough to tell us how enjoyable and memorable this day was for them at school.

And later they had a fun meal of cake, wafers, pav bhaaji and Rasna. Then, we had to push them home, as they were not ready to leave!

As usual, our fun fair for the KG children was a whole of fun, and different too!

Wish you all a very happy and a prosperous new year!

The 2011-12 alumni felicitation event of 2040!

The 10th standard students of Millennium National School and their parents witnessed an amazing futuristic event on Wednesday, December 21, 2011. It was the alumni felicitation event held at the school. But it was not just the normal gathering of alumni. The 2011-12 batch of 10th standard students had gone into the future for some time and were talking in the year 2040! They had gathered in the year 2040; almost 30 years after leaving the school! They were talking about their careers and achievements; sharing their experiences and giving words of advice to existing students of the school.

The event was organized to give students a vision of what their strengths are, what they want to achieve in their lives and which career paths should they choose to accomplish their objectives. Also giving students a flavor of talking about their success in future and building up their public speaking confidence were amongst the other objectives of the event. Students were dressed smartly according to their chosen professions and carried themselves very confidently. In short it was an enchanting atmosphere!

It was very interesting to see that apart from the conventional careers in medicine, engineering, accounting and architecture; students had thought of a range of career options. This included varied professions and fields like expert linguist, professor, event management, lawyer, businessman, hotel management, astrophysicist, computer games designer, columnist, corporate trainer, fashion designer, product designer, nutritionist, researcher, chief editor, HRD, commercial pilot, psychiatrist, equity fund management, marine biologist, civil engineer, fashion journalist, interior designer. The list is endless!

Some students had passion for sports and had become renowned sportspersons in cricket, chess, football and basketball to name a few. Some of them had decided to turn their hobbies into a profession. They had chosen professions like wildlife photography, classical dancing, painting, film direction and mehendi designing. Some followed the professions of their parents while others thought of completely new fields. Many students wanted to be in research and were aiming to bring in new inventions and innovations to help the mankind.

Students had interest in not only doing jobs but many wanted to become successful entrepreneurs. They were seeing themselves at positions such as CEO, partner, proprietor which was quite promising to know. Few of them had even opted for freelance work. And there were quite a few Nobel Prize winners in the bunch as well!

It was remarkable that students had clear vision of where they want to pursue their higher studies. Many students opted to go abroad and were aspiring to study at universities like Harvard, Oxford, MIT, Stanford etc. IIM and IIT were the popular ones amongst the Indian institutes.

Also many students mentioned about coming back to India and “giving something back” to the nation after completing the higher education and working abroad for few years. Many students said that they work for social causes such as providing affordable treatment for incurable diseases, providing affordable homes to masses, building eco-friendly homes. This showed their long-term vision and social awareness.

As the children stood on stage, walked the red carpet and their achievements were announced, they got a feel of success and fame. They were interviewed on how they reached the level they were at then and they spoke about hard work and perseverance.

After short speeches of all the students from the future; the event ended with sharing views of parents and students. Parents felt that this one-of-a-kind exercise helped their children to build a thought process about their future. Students also shared their experiences of how they prepared for this event and how it helped them to think seriously about their career. Other students of 8th and 9th standards who attended the event got to know about the numerous career opportunities.

“This is our endeavour to shape the future generation and keep them focused on what they wish to achieve. The chances of straying off the path of hard work and perseverance greatly reduce if one has a taste of what lies at the end of the road,” quoted Nikhil Karkare, who was the brainchild behind this event.

“This will help the children plan and think about long term goals in whatever decisions they take in their life. That is really what the next generation needs to get an edge” says Arpita Karkare, director of Millennium National School.

At the end of the program, each student was given a bookmark with the event marked on it, the student’s name and profession on it and some memorable motivational quotes from noted personalities. This will be a keepsake and remind them of the thrill and exhilaration that they can work towards.

When Dr. Phatak, founder of Millennium National School, started the school with a focus on all round development, he did say at the very beginning that 30 years hence we will see our alumni across the world as leaders in various fields. Looks like these confident students will go ahead and fulfill that dream.

All in all it was a very incredible and delightful exercise for students as well as their parents! We even gave it a cool name – Dreams Unlimited!

Difference between C.B.S.E and S.S.C (Maharashtra) syllabus

I just put up an article comparing the C.B.S.E and S.S.C (Maharashtra) syllabus. It was much needed, as we get asked about this almost every day. Here is the link.

Warning: This is by no means complete or authoritative. Please consider it with a pinch of salt. All I wanted to do was to clear the air. We still follow the SSC syllabus, and will continue to do so. If we change our mind, we will let you know!

Quick and efficient form distribution – again

Update: We have stopped the form distribution for Nursery.

I have written about our admission process before (urge you to read it before you read this article). We want to make sure that our efficiency trend continues. This year, we haven’t seen any articles in the paper like last year about parents queues, and are glad about it!

This year, short admission forms for Nursery will be distributed in the school office from November 28, 2011 onwards. The office timings are 8am to 12pm and 2pm to 4pm. Forms will be available only till 2nd December 2011, 4pm.

As we have repeatedly stressed before, we do not like queues. So, if you are a prospective parent, please, there is no need to stand in queue from some ghastly midnight hour! Request you to please co-operate with us, as we are following this system for your benefit.

Please make sure your child fits within the age criteria. We are very stringent about the age criteria, so request you to please check. After filling out the short form, you will be given a username and password to fill the online application form. Please make sure you fill the online application form as soon as possible – latest by Thursday, 1st December 2011, 4pm.

Next, we will call the parents for a meeting (there are about 30 parents in one group) at various time slots in the day only on weekends (again, for convenience). They get a tour of the school so they know where the child will be, along with a presentation about the school. Then they are given a brief orientation of the school, its philosophy, the ideals etc. After that they get about 30 minutes of Q and A time where we try our best to address their queries.

Please note, here the parents are interviewing us, not the other way round! We firmly believe that the parents need to be convinced that ours is a school suitable for their child. We also arrange for the entertainment of the children. We have sports activities, some music, some drawing, amongst other things. And then, they leave. After that we have a random selection of the students and email them whether they have been shortlisted for admission. All those who were not considered the first time are again put into the pool for the next rounds. And so on and so forth, till all seats are filled.

So, do parents have to keep coming to the school to see if their name has come up in the selection? Not at all. As long as they check their email once a day, they will get the information (either way – if they do get selected ,or are put on the waiting list, or do not secure admission)! Since we are still figuring out how to get SMS’ delivered to parents, we will only use email as the mode of communication.

Continuation of online cultural exchange with a school in Norway

As you probably know, we have been conducting an online cultural exchange program with students of the Majorstuen Skole of Norway since last year. This year, we got off to a grand start with 4 of our students participating in a “Skype conference”. Shubhankar Deshpande, Neel Kelkar, Rujuta Kelkar and Mukta Joshi spoke to Hannah, Lea, Olivia and Sølve of Majorstuen. Co-ordinating from our side was Arpita Madam, and from Norway was Oliver Madsen.

This year, this first conference was going to be covered on National TV on Norway, and was also going to be overseen by an important diplomat from Norway. Here is the link of the news clipping – you probably won’t understand much, unless you know Norwegian!

The students will first spend the few sessions getting to know each other, and then knowing about each other’s countries and regions. Then, they would discuss one or two festivals in detail – the food, the custom, the history, celebration style etc. After that, they will wrap up, and end the cultural exchange. And yes, there will be lots of time for small talk too – like which movies they like, which songs they like (you would be surprised at the number of Hindi songs the Norwegian kids know!) etc.

This virtual cultural exchange has become a wonderful international learning experience for our children! In this ‘flat’ globalised world that we live in, the Millennium kids will get an edge over their peers and be able to adapt, surive and thrive! And that exactly is our founder’s vision – that after a decade – when our alumni are adults – they will take on the world!

Powering Rajiv Gandhi Academy of E-Learning

This post was long due…

We have been working with the Pune Municipal Corporation in powering the most advanced school that the Government has launched yet. Titled, “The Rajiv Gandhi Academy of E-Learning”, this was an initiative undertaken by Shri. Ulhas (aka Aba) Bagul. The school is located at the Shivdarshan chowk near Mitra Mandal Karyalay. Shri Bagul wanted an ultra-modern school, and who else could help them in this regard, but us!?

So, Dr. Phatak took this up as a challenge, and along with the team at Millennium, made a concrete plan of what the education methodology should be, and how we could use the electronic medium effectively.

The concept of the school is exactly like ours – bagless. The students don’t carry books to the school, and get worksheets to carry back home. The school is equipped with LCD television sets and computer labs, just like our school. As you might have already guessed, we provide worksheets to the school children there, and yes, the labs and classrooms are powered by the all-encompassing myEshala!

The teachers, children and parents at the school are extremely happy with the education being imparted to them (why wouldn’t they – our content is a class apart!). Dr. Phatak envisioned that our content and methodology should be used by one and all to effectively impart education to the grassroots. This is a positive step in that direction, and we, team Millennium, are eager to make his dream come true. We really hope that people do use what we have made effectively, so that the overall quality of grassroots education improves.

The Honorable Chief Minister Shri Prithviraj Chavhan, and the Honorable Deputy Chief Minister Shri Ajit Pawar inaugurated the Rajiv Gandhi Academy of E-Learning on the 21st of August, 2011. Here are a few links to the press releases of the same:

E-Sakal

The Times of India

Here’s hoping that the government takes a cue from this project and decides to implement our methodology, concepts and contents all over!
